报告摘要: The Paul Pelliot Expedition, a French exploration in 1908 to Dunhuang was allowed to enter the library cave where they found tens of thousands of manuscripts in Chinese, Tibetan, Sanskrit and Uighur, as well as large paintings on silk, hemp and paper. Pelliot, an expert Sinologist, was allowed to spend a total three weeks in the library cave, working tirelessly to check through thousands of scrolls. He selected a range of religious, secular and local texts which he considered to contain new information or to be of linguistic interest.

We studied the wood of two rare manuscripts (Pelliot Chinois 2547 and Pelliot Chinois 2490) from the VIIIth century (Tang dynasty (618-907)). We focused on the question if the manuscripts have been produced in the local area, considering the importance of the location on the ? silk road ?, or if they had been made in another region. The wood we identified was being a Tamarix species, which seems to confirm that this document has been made locally. In deed, Tamarix spp. is distributed in the desert area characteristic of nearby Taklamakan.
