Abstract:
Malaysia is amongst the largest exporters of high quality tropical timber to the world market. Exports of the natural resources and related product as well as manufactured goods have contributed to the Malaysian economy development. Wood-based industry in Malaysia is divided into two main sectors which are the solid wood industry and bio-composite industry. Wooden furniture is the largest sub sector of the timber trade following plywood, sawn timber, particle board, medium density fiberboard (MDF), veneered panels products (LVL) and builders’ carpentry and joinery (BCJ). The Malaysian furniture industry is a highly export-oriented with over 90% of its production. Furniture production in Malaysia ranges from traditional to contemporary and it includes a custom designed by oversea buyers under international brand names. Traditional furniture is also known as ethnic furniture, which it refers to the local ethnic designs and motif. It was embedded as an added value into products. Most furniture design are based on natural elements such as flora and fauna, has given a great impact as a display of good quality hand-made, and good understanding of culture and religion. Therefore, contemporary furniture is based on current design that focusing on customer needs, trend and lifestyle. Furniture made also is related to modern technological equipment and the manufacturing automation process. Wood furniture has becomes increasingly competitive, where the Malaysian furniture industry has moving away from the low-end markets and capable to penetrate into the medium and high-end markets.
