报告摘要:
In recent years, the international community has recognized the vital role that forests play for sustaining the ecological health of the earth. Forest education has been highlighted for its crucial role in promoting sustainable forest management, forest products utilization, and conservation. This study reviews the historical change of forest education research in Japan.
Forestry education activities have been conducted for more than 100 years. The first forestry technical school was established in 1882 for training professionals, and in general education classes, forestry and woodworking were taught. In the 1950s and 1960s, greening forestation activities were promoted to restore areas devastated by war. In the 1970s, with the advancement of urbanization and the fuel, people’s engagement with forests has declined. As the result, local forestry organizations conducted activities in forests to introduce forestry to the general public, and forest education began receiving attention it deserves. Forest education research increased in the 1980s, with the main targets on specialized education and exhibition facilities.
In 1999, “Forest Environmental Education” policy was proposed. The Japanese Forestry Agency promoted this policy, and the “Basic Law of Forest and Forestry” was revised. In the 2000s, various types of forestry education research were conducted, including educational programs in school or community, various targets audience and teaching leaders, and policy measures. Some typical themes were “Moku-iku” which promotes sustainable wood use, and forest kindergartens. In 2018, “Forest Education” was established as a separate research field in the Japanese Forest Society. In 2024, the first scholarly book of forest education was published.
Forest education would be key to engaging citizens, as it encompasses the entire academic discipline. We hope that forest education will unite those involved in forestry research, industry, government, and the general public and that this group will continue to stress the importance of forest education.
